Understanding Bullying

"Bullying is a distinctive pattern of deliberately harming and humiliating others. It's a very durable behavioral style, largely because bullies get what they want—at least at first. Bullies are made, not born.

Bullies couldn't exist without victims, and they don't pick on just anyone; those singled out lack assertiveness and radiate fear long before they ever encounter a bully. Grown-up bullies wreak havoc in their relationships and in the workplace."

This week during our morning time, we will be watching videos from the NBC News series on Bullying. It is heart-wrenching series on a very real topic that kids are dealing with every day. It's raw, it's emotional, it hits to the core of each kid. What I love about this series is that it opens up communication and EMPOWERS kids to stop bullying when they see it happen. That is where the change will occur- when the bystanders don't sit there and let it happen. I hope parents at home will watch this series, too, in case your child has questions or wants to discuss this at home. Let's give our kids the tools they need to make a positive impact in our community. :)

Recently, there was a national news story about bullying that happened in Kaukauna, near Green Bay. I have included a copy of the news story below. Please know that I take bullying in any form very seriously in my classroom and it is not tolerated. I want to provide a safe place in my classroom where all students can learn and grow.

The trip went great! We had such a fun time at The Lion King in Appleton, WI! Thanks so much to my chaperones for volunteering their time and thanks to the kids for behaving so well. I'm looking forward to our trip next year to see Beauty & The Beast.

The Drama Club trip to see The Lion King is going to happen as planned, even though school was cancelled for today. The forecast for Saturday looks fine. Please be at the school at 10:30 Saturday morning. If parents would like to drive their children down, that is fine. Meet at the school to get the ticket. Tickets are non-refundable.

Just a note...

I am not doing Math Tutoring for the 4th Quarter.

Tutoring and homework help is offered in the Library every day after school, so feel free to go up there to get any extra help you may need.

I need the time after school for grading, planning lessons, and updating Powerschool.

Thank you for your understanding,

Mrs. Aho

P.S. I will be willing to stay after with students that are struggling on an “as needed” basis. Feel free to contact me if you have any concerns.

3rd Quarter grades will be done by April 10th, 2013 :) Happy Spring Break, everyone!
